Changing Cattle Breeds……

We have spent the last 5 years transiting our herd from Corriente cattle to Brangus/Angus Beef cattle. The process has been slow because it is really hard to justify selling a momma cow who consistently drops calves every year without difficulty. The corriente cattle are primarily used for sport events such as team roping and steer dogging. But, you can eat them! They are a very lean meat which is good for you but not quite as tasty! Although the ones we have butchered which were grass fed were great- you just have to cook your roast longer! For your steaks stick with those fat breeds like Angus & Brangus! They are excellent mothers and can scratch out a living on cactus if needed! Another cool fact is that when you breed corriente cattle with homozygous polled (no horns) cattle (such as Angus & Brangus) they will also be polled because the polled gene is dominant. So for awhile we will hang on to the corriente mommas and slowly replace them with Angus or Brangus mommas!
