BIG CHIEF!
Big Chief! Enjoying a little hay! We have used Chief to build our herd dams! Big bulky broads! He has been a great producer for us! We will be selling Chief this year because we have maxed out his genetics in our herd! His babies will produce lots of angus X babies for us here on the ranch! We will miss his gentle demeanor and virility! Chief was the first registered bull we ever bought. We bought him from a friend that raises registered Brangus. We knew we wanted to increase our herd genetics for a better quality beef cattle. We wanted to balance the beef quality and ruggedness of the cattle because in the hill country we have rough terrain and periods of drought. The Brangus cattle have the beef cattle genetics from the Angus influence but also the ruggedness of the Brahman cattle. The Angus genetics make better steaks but the Brahman can survive better in our climate. Angus cattle are a type of cattle called Bos Taurus which is primarily European cattle adapted to cooler climates and the Brahman are Bos indicus which is Indian cattle that is more adapted to arid hot climates. There is not a 50/50 splint as one would think for the Brangus cattle it is Angus 5/8 and Brahman 3/8 split. The investment in the new bull immediately paid off. His calves brought us more at the sale immediately. His calves were of better quality than what we had previously been producing. His calves were all solid black and “beefy”. They were born small, at that time, we did not use any heifers because of his massive size and wanted to make sure our mommas did not have any calving difficulties even though his CE score was 1.6. Our calf crop began to look more uniform when we took them to the sale and we started selling calves in lots at that time. One of the problems we did find with the Brangus cattle is that the Brahman influence causes the bulls to have extra foreskin or prepuce which can cause the bull do drag his foreskin on the ground and injury it especially during breeding season. Chief did injury his prepuce and he had to undergo a “reefing procedure” AKA circumcision for bulls! It was a cost we did not foresee but it was definitely worth it because he is back in business and going strong now! He was worth it in the long run financially for increasing our calf crop! Going forward we will only use registered bulls on our herd! Check him out in the cattle for sale section of the website.
