Vaccine Program

In the spring, we vaccinate all the new calves. And typically in the fall, we vaccinate all the new calves and the entire herd with their annual vaccines. But this year we have moved our annual vaccines to the spring to get better coverage for anthrax and pink eye. We worked with our local vet to establish a vaccine program for our ranch that is very comprehensive. Our vaccine program includes:

  1. Super poly bac B which protects the cattle against 7 different illnesses. They include Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Bovine Virus Diarrhea (Type I), Haemophilus somnus, Mannheimia haemolytica A1, Mannheimia haemolytica A6 and Pasteurella multocida A3

  2. Myco-Bac B which protects cattle against mycoplasma bovis a respiratory illness in cattle

  3. Vira shield 6 + VL5 protects against 6 six infectious viruses plus two bacteria vibriosis and leptospirosis. *bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine virus diarrhea (BVD Type 1 noncytopathic, type 1 cytoopathic and Type 2 noncytopathic), parainfluenza Type 3 (PI3), and bovine respiratory syncytial (BRSV) viruses and Campylobacter fetus, Leptospira canicola, grippotyphosa, hardjo-bovis, icterohaemorrhagiae, and pomona.

  4. Covexin 8 protects agains clostridium chauvoei, septicum, novyi, perfringens types c & d haemolyticum (bacillary hemoglobinuria/ red water and tetani)

  5. Anthrax: this protects against Anthrax in cattle. We only started vaccinating for Anthrax after a 2019 anthrax outbreak in Texas. Although the cases were isolated to southwest Texas the state Veterinarian recommended vaccinating cattle. There have also been reported cases in 2021 in a couple of northern counties in Texas.

  6. Moraxella bovis for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis

  7. Brucellosis for brucella abortus which is administered by the vet for our heifers before one year of age.

We do get some cross coverage to be able to cover all the illnesses that could be harmful to our herd.

The cattle are also de-wormed twice a year in the spring and in the fall with alternating active ingredients. We have a dry climate so our parasite burden is relatively low and we are able to treat with only a pour on de-wormer. In addition, the cattle are tagged with fly tags twice a year to keep the fly burden down. We have found that controlling the flies helps our cattle keep weight on them. I have attached a copy of our vaccine protocol for you!
